Another post about a delicious snack that I found thropugh my usual daily browsing thrpugh the world of information! I came across the Highland Farms foods facebook and, after looking up their products and their story, I decided to contact the brand. The y were very generpous to send me some products to try and review on the blog so you can get to know them too!
I got the Quinoa Pops line to try out and, let me tell you, I have a lot of things to say about it!
But, first, let me tell you a bit more about this company. The main focus of the brand is to develop nutritious, healthy and tasty products. All products are made with high quality ingredients and are processed in nut-free and FDA certified facilities.
There is also a social aspect and concern within the company and that is always something that draws me in to want to know something more about a food company. The quinoa used to produce Highland Farms products is originally harvested in Ecuador. The local communities harvest the quinoa plant by hand and, by doing do, they have a 25% crop loss. Adding this to the fact that during harvest season the local farmers sell their produce at wholesale markets that doesn't pay them a fair price, the end result is an unfair business cycle.
Highland Farms works with the farmers helping them with the transportation of the crops from the field to the supermarket, assuring them a fair market price. When you purchase any of these products who are also doing your part in helping raise the standard of living of the indigenous communities who work with the brand.
The company is also a member of the 1% For the Planet organization, which allows them to donate 1% of their sales to noble causes. Check the website here to get some more information on this and other aspects of the company. There's also a recipe tab that you can look into with suggestions on how to use these products and different recipes that you can make. At the moment you can buy Highland Farms products online at Amazon, EBay and on the online store. Also, you can find them at Kings Supermarkets in NJ, Harris Teeter, Balducci's Gourmet stores, De Cicco's and Foodtown stores.
Let's talk about the products!
As I've previously explained I got the Quinoa Pops to try out. These are healthy crunchy snacks made with all natural ingredients. They're a source of protein, essential amino acids, healthy fats and carbohydrates. They are available in 3 different sweet flavors and 2 salty ones:
Besides the pops, you can also buy high quality, perfectly grown Quinoa. This is from the finest quality, premium white quinoa and naturally gluten-free. It's available in 16 oz. bags. Per serving this quinoa has 222 cal, 4 g fat, 8 g protein and 2.7 mg iron.
The third product available from this family of products is the Quinomeal. It's the perfect product to have for breakfast. It's made from quinoa flakes and can be enjoyed with milk, yogurt and/or fruit. It can also be used as a base for a healthy smoothie, parfait, protein bowl or as a protein pancake mix! Per serving of quinomeal you'll be getting 150 cal, 2 g total fat, no added sugars and 5 g protein.
Smoothie with Cinnamon-Pops
The cinnamon flavored pops were the first ones I tried because I really do love cinnamon. It reminds me of winter time and Christmas flavors! I know, I know, it's August yet but every chance to smell like Christmas is coming is a good one for me!
I started by snacking on the pops to get a feeling of the flavor and then I decided that they would be great as a topping for my morning smoothie. I love smoothies in the morning because they give you that energy and nutrient quick that we all need to start a day. I also add something for crunchiness just because I'm missing something if I don'rt have anything to much on!
Adding the pops turned out perfectly and the flavor combination was delicious. I used the following ingredients:
I just used my Nutribullet to blend everything together, except for the pops, honey and coconut. Poured it into the cup and poured the toppings over. Super delicious for a nutritious and fresh start of the day!
Dragon fruit parfaits with banana and Quinoa Vanilla Pops
Wow, just wow! These turned out beautiful and tasty enough to be called a dessert!
I used the vanilla pops to brighten up a dragon fruit thick smoothie turned parfait with the help of a sliced banana! The kids helped me prepare it and we had so much fun together that it was just one of those mom/son and daughter bonging moments that I love...in the kitchen, with foods and with my precious children - PERFECT!
I'm not even going to write an ingredient list! It's one of those simple, 4 ingredient recipe that you can whip up in 5 minutes. Just blend the dragon fruit frozen pack with 1/2 vanilla yogurt. If it gets to thick add just a bit of milk but son't overdo it, it must stay thick enough to hold its shape on the cup, like a mousse-like texture.
Just look at that color!
Then, start assembling the cups: place half of a sliced banana on each cup and fill it up to 3/4 with the thick dragon fruit mixture. Than top it off with the vanilla pops. Easy!
I don't know about you but I'm salivating over here! I think I need to make some more of these very soon!
Miss B is even offering you a parfait! Isn't she cute?
I enjoyed trying out these pops and, as we speak, I'm trying out something with the Quinoa Pops Italian Herb variety...I'll let you know all about it if it turns out perfect! I know it will!
As for the Sweet Chili and Black Pepper flavors they're really great to make up some salty snacks plate with some cheese, olives, some chorizo or salami and fresh fruit. I love eating the pops and the flavor is not too strong so it doesn't overpower any other flavor of whatever else you might be eating it with.
It turned out like a perfect summer lazy afternoon, snacking around with the kids playing in the backyard enjoying the perfect weather! These packages are big so they will make up for a lot more snack afternoons here around the house. Popping them in a container when going out to run some errands in the morning is perfect to have a healthy and crunchy snack before lunchtime.
I loved the pops and I really hope that you can also try them out!
Those little black salt dots are an explosion of flavor every time you take a bite!
For those who love bold flavors these Sweet Chili Quinoa Pops are the perfect choice! A spicy kick with a great texture is always so addictive...the problem will be being able to stop eating them!
