And there came Summer break - the time known as the endless snacking days!
Even though we've been sending our kids to school everyday with a morning snack it's now that it becomes harder to deal with this. The schedules become crazy, packed with summer camps or activities, play dates, morning hikes and then we're all going to be asked the same question:
- "Mom! I'm hungry! What's for snack?"
Well, I always try to make it simple and fast to when it comes to going out the door in the morning or when I know that my kids want to go to the park. Simple steps that make every day go smoother and stress free to enjoy the sunny glorious days ahead!
If you know that your kids will be home at a certain time, that will help to get things organized until that times comes. So, if you're planning to go outside always have a bag or a big lunch bag big enough to hole everyone's snacks and drinks. Don't forget to always have napkins and a bag to keep the garbage until you can throw it out in the nearest bin. On the previous weekend try to schedule this in order to shop for the items you're missing and save yourself some time during the week. After all, you want to get some rest too!
PICK THE FAMILY'S FAVORITES:
Make a list of the favorite snacks that usually get picked by your family. If the kids want some chips or cookies always try to split them up in reusable bags and write each family member's name on it so it doesn't get tricky when the time to eat comes around. Each one picked their own so they'll stick to it.
DON'T FORGET THE DRINKS:
It's going to be hot outside and the kids will be running around so, make sure to have those reusable water bottles filled up and cooled before you head out. If they prefer juice choose the smaller packages and try to get a brand with the lowest amount of sugar possible and no preservatives. Again, make sure that everyone knows what bottle they'll be having!
KEEP IT HEALTHY:
We all know that the variety of snacks is just overwhelming huge! You can loose hours at the grocery store going through those aisles and reading labels just to make sure that you're choosing one of the best ones or, at least, not one of the worst!
We always have fresh fruit and vegetables around the house so we usually carry a variety of fruit that I wash and pat dry and then the kids can eat them with pretty cocktail forks. There are other great options like popcorn (you can spruce them up just by sprinkling some cinnamon and tossing them to spread the flavor), string cheese, mixed nuts (just make sure to portion them not to over do it), crackers, low salt organic chips (sweet potato chips are my son J's favorite ones!) or Greek yogurt (choose your favorite flavor and just make sure to carry spoons too!).
These are the tips that help me get through summer break with having a breakdown!
I hope they'll help you too! In a couple of days I'll be able to show you some of the healthy snacking brand we've been using. They are delicious options and great tasting snacks, so be on the lookout for the next posts!
Today is a really exciting day! I start sharing with all of you a brand that I’ve been using since I got to the US! As most of the moms I know we are always on the go and, sometimes, we forget to prep lunch or dinner and we need a fast but healthy option to feed our family. I have found that solution with Gainful meals!
All the meals, which you can get frozen or in a meal pack (I’ll get that later on) are all natural and made of 100% whole grain steel cut oats. We love our oats in the morning and evening with some fruit, yogurt, honey or nut butter. And now they’re making it available to us to have them for a meal too? How great is that?
Grainful meals don't have preservatives, artificial colors or flavors. They are gluten free certified, rich in fiber and there are no GMO ingredients either, which I know is always something to avoid at all costs! The more natural you keep your food, the better it will be for you and your family. With these meals you get 100% natural ingredients, low fat and high protein content.
As for me the frozen meals are a staple in any home. I mean, I can get it from the freezer to the microwave and in 5 minutes I have a whole meal to which I can add some more protein like chicken or eggs or I can just have it like that for a reinforced snack or a small meal. I must tell you it doesn’t get any better that that as for fast “good for you” food!
Lets meet the family of products!
As you can see you get to choose from a great range of flavors, from international cuisine to southern inspirations and you'll have no work at all doing so! Whatever your imagination and inspiration takes you just add your favorite toppings and some fresh herbs and you will be giving your family a true chef inspired creations with your own personal touch.
I LOVE the "Porcini Mushroom Chicken" and I usually just add some Parmesan shavings and that's enough to have kind of a mushroom risotto!
The range of frozen entrees can satisfy every taste bud and you have 8 amazing varieties to choose from:
More recently, Grainful decided to expand the brand and they came up with the Meal Kits. They are shelve stable meal packages full of bold flavors and natural ingredients that can help prepare your homemade meals with a little less effort, or a lot less may I say so!!! These are ideal if you intend to further personalize the dish because you can use the kit as a base for the meal and then build up your dinner or lunch around it. For example, cook up a batch of steaming seafood, corn cobs and add some grilled sausage and you'll have the most amazing Jambalaya with the right fixings!
I'll be posting on Instagram and Facebook all the different experiences both with the frozen meals and the meal kits so you can have a starting point. From there you just have to make the meals your own. Try something new and see how that works!
This are the meal kits available:
You can find Grainful meals on your local retail store. If you prefer you can access the website and go here for the store locator. Just put in your zip code or full address and it'll tell you the nearest location where you can find Grainful products. Being a loyal costumer I know that there are always promotions at the store. For example this week I know that locally I can get these meals for $1.99, how cool is that? Nutritious, natural, safe and satisfying meals for under $2!
It's also possible to buy the products online through the website, here.
The frozen meals come in 5 pack boxes for $41.63 or you can get a 4 pack variety to try them out for $32.50.
The meals kits run at $5.99 each and you can get single packages.
With all this information I think I've made my point. You can get frozen options at the supermarket without sacrificing you health. Nothing justifies eating food with artificial preservatives, over processed food and things that we already now are just making us unhealthy.
Please, when you try Grainful let me know what you chose and how you cooked it so we can spread the creativity! Have a great week and be mindful about what to bring in the shopping cart for the next grocery trip.
Also, thank you Grainful, for the generosity in providing the frozen meals and meal kits that I'm reviewing. It's always a pleasure to work with such inviting and caring companies. I'll do my best promoting not only the products shown but also a healthy lifestyle, which really is the main goal of my blog and social contributions.
As a mother I'm always thinking about what I feed my kids and I think we eat a pretty healthy diet. At least we try! Yes, there is the occasional pizza and yes, there are cookies but I think we can all find a balance in what we can give them.
I don't believe in radical or extreme limitations. I believe we should eat a little bit of everything and always have in mind to have different ingredients and meals throughout the week. Also talking to our own kids about nutrition is a precious tool; they become interested in knowing the facts about food and it may also boost they're self awareness.
Here are some tools that might help to get kids into healthy eating!
1. Reduce temptation!
If you're going to continue to have the usual unhealthy snacks around and at sight they will sure want them! There is no polite way to say this:
KEEP TEMPTATIONS AWAY!
If they tend to load up on chips try to find healthier options. There are brands with low sodium content, no preservatives, no GMO's and we all know those are the best. In time, and with my reviews section, I will show you some of those brands and I'll try to have a board of healthy snacks posted really soon.
If its cookies they prefer try to find some healthy recipes online and bake your won. There are a ton of ideas out there, look up Pinterest and you'll be entertained for hours!
2. Color, color, color!
